I went to HR Block once and was thoroughly unimpressed. Still not even sure what I actually paid for. I’ll never go back. TurboTax is an expensive version of what FreeTaxUSA already does for free. And in that case you would want the cheaper of the two which is TaxAct. It helps if you keep using the same software once you start since it will import all the info from last year. In summary, my Tax bill with Turbo Tax would have been $70 filing fee and several hundred dollars tax bill due to double local taxation. With H R Block, through free file on IRS site, I was able to get free e-filing, and a refund.They're around. Keep looking. Stick with the private firms, and not H&R Block. Even a couple hundred dollars isn't bad. Build a relationship with your CPA. Show up organized, treat them with respect, and be completely upfront with them. MilTax (H&R) - Federal refund: $2,600 / State refund: $1,500 = $4100. TurboTax - Federal refund :$1,400 / State refund :$3,800 (minus cost of $300) = $4900.Haven't tried the other services, but TurboTax Free File works with FEIE this year and I was successfully able to e-file for the first time as an expat. The issue with "needing" a US address this year is that the form to register with TurboTax (after basically completing your taxes) doesn't give you the option to put a foreign address. I just filed my taxes through TurboTax Deluxe (TT) that I purchased at Costco for $40 and was curious what the difference between H&R Block (HRB) was as they had some seemingly better prices. The Premium has gone on sale for $25 occasionally. Long story short they both came up with about the same refund.
